My doctor diagnosed me more than 2 years ago with an extremely rare pituitary disease and started me on heavy duty steroids since that was the proper course of treatment. I didn’t feel better for more than a few months, and the heavy fatigue returned, I gained 60lbs in 18 months, my teeth rotted (4 root canals and 3 extractions in 18 months), my veins are visible under my thinning facial and neck/shoulder skin, my muscles atrophied and my spinal cord is being pinched together by multiple herniated discs that cause pain and yet I’ve never had any accident. My short term memory stinks. I felt steroids were the cause, and I repeatedly asked my doctor to take me off the meds or reduce my dosage safely. She refused, saying I would have life threatening consequences and that recovery from the disease “takes time.” I went to a renowned specialist for second opinion, and she said that the test for this disease should never have been continued, that even though it was technically the right diagnosis, the test showed that my initials numbers were high, not low. She said that steroids have an immediate effect, and that if they didn’t work, my doctor absolutely should have taken me off and done other tests. She then sent me to Johns Hopkins, where the doctor there said I now have Cushings Disease, either from the steroids or that may have been the disease in the first place. I am being weaned off steroids. When I tried to talk with my original doctor about getting off the steroids, she ignored me…she wouldn’t return my email or my call. So now I need neck surgery, I am on heart meds and anti seizure meds that the steroids did to my heart and nervous system, I look terrible, and I feel terrible. I can’t work, and am applying for disability at the age of 33. Every doctor I’ve seen said that my doctor should not have put me on steroids in the first place, but that could be human error…however, letting me languish for more than 2 years while I continued to get worse is unforgivable. I work in healthcare myself and never want to ruin anyone’s career, but I’ve lost so much time. I feel awful, my medical and dental bills are huge, I can’t work, my husband and I lost precious time to have a baby. My family and my husband want me to file a lawsuit. Any grounds?
