Help for Dwindling Hormone Levels

Although a lot of women participate in hormone replacement therapy many do not get the results they seek. Doctors mainly prescribe estrogen and progesterone. But other hormones could also be lacking in the body, such as thyroid hormone, DHEA, melatonin and human growth hormone.

Competently administered natural hormone replacement therapy not only eases the symptoms of menopause, but also slows the progress of aging, slows osteoporosis, perks up memory, makes for a brighter mood and increases one’s sense of well being. As the body ages, it produces less and less of the necessary hormones – these need to be replaced, not just one or two.

Bioidentical (natural) hormones are created in a lab, but the differ from synthetic hormones in that they are exactly like natural hormones down to the last molecule. They come mostly from plants. The body accepts them as natural substances instead of rejecting them as a foreign substance; therefore, they do not cause side effects. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is administered by a doctor, who first examines the patient and has lab tests done to find out which hormones are needed and how much of each one.

Synthetic hormones are also made in a lab, but most importantly they are not identical to your body’s hormones. Most doctors prescribe Premarin and Provera. Premarin is a synthetic form of estrogen and is made from the urine of pregnant mares. Provera is a synthetic progesterone and does not have the same functions as natural progesterone. Most women get the same dose of medication and usually do not have their hormone levels checked.

It is extremely important to measure the entire hormone panel of an individual, not just female hormones such as estrogen, and tailor a replacement program for the individual to bring all of the body’s hormones into balance. Hormones are powerful substances that control multiple functions throughout the body. To little or too much of them is not conducive to long-term emotional, mental or physical health.

The optimal dose of hormones would be enough to relieve symptoms without prescribing an overdone. A program needs to be tailored for each individual woman, because hormone levels can vary up to 1500% from woman to woman. Lab testing provides the basis for this.

It is also important to prescribe the hormones on a gradient scale, so the body is not suddenly overwhelmed and has time to get used to them. Testosterone, progesterone, thyroid hormone, estrogen, DHEA, cortisol, melatonin and growth hormone are the minimum that should be used. Lab tests indicate individual needs.

Find a good doctor, and have the lab tests done. If you are already on hormone replacement therapy, but do not have the results you want, now you know why.
