Identifying Perleche

We often hear people complaining about having chapped lips. Indeed, having chapped lips can be painful and quite annoying. Just imagine how painful it can be when the cracks develop along the corners of your mouth. The development of cracks or fissures along the corners of the mouth is often referred to as perleche. This skin condition is even more painful than having chapped lips. It can be caused by fungal and bacterial conditions, and having this skin condition can even be embarrassing to some. However, if you have a perleche treatment at hand, you need not suffer any more.

Also referred to as angular cheilitis, this skin condition can be easily spotted and recognized. One of the most common clues that you or a family member might be suffering from this disease is the appearance or development of fissures and cracks along the corners of the mouth. Redness and swelling can often come with the cracks, causing the corners of the mouth to become tender and sore. In severe cases, ulcers can also develop along the aforementioned areas which can eventually begin to swell and show pus.

This skin condition can make it difficult for the patient to open or close his or her mouth. When someone is suffering from this skin condition eating, smiling, and talking can become truly painful. More often than not, these activities can also cause the sores to re-open, making them prone to infection. After a certain period of time, the sores may begin to crust over and scab, and the constant cracking and healing of the corners of your mouth can cause these areas to itch.

It helps that you seek medical attention at the first signs of perleche. This skin condition can be cause by nutritional deficiencies or might also come as a complication of diabetes. In other cases, the condition can also be caused by poorly fitting dentures. You can seek help either from your family doctor or your dentist so you can better understand your condition and learn more about what treatment options are available.

You might need to undergo a series of tests to determine what kind of treatment can best treat your skin condition. Your doctor might ask you for a sample of the culture of the area to have this tested. This can help determine if bacteria are present in the area, and what kind of bacteria it is. You might also need to undergo a blood test to check for possible nutritional deficiencies.
