This may come as a surprise to you, but many of the skin care creams you see on TV or in magazine ads contain harmful substances. Some have even been shown to be cancerous in clinical studies. I don’t want to alarm you, but you should be very careful about what you rub into your skin.
Skin is the largest organ in the body. Anything applied topically to the skin will be heavily absorbed (through pores) into the body.
When choosing an anti-wrinkle product, focus solely on ingredients. Ignore the big name celebrity endorsing it, the millions being poured into marketing it, and even a friend or relative recommending it. Only the ingredients tell the real story.
Here are two to avoid…
Mineral oil (also called paraffin, paraffin wax, petrolatum) is very popular among skin care manufacturers. It’s cheap. But it also prevents skin from breathing. It stops up pores, which causes toxins to build up and acne to break out.
Using a mineral oil product will also cause chapping and dryness. Your skin will actually become dependent on mineral oil. And prolonged, repeated exposure, ironically enough, will cause premature aging (the thing you’re trying to prevent).
Dioxane (a synthetic derivative of coconut) is also frequently added to anti aging skin care products. And it’s also bad. Not only is it found in anti-wrinkle creams, it’s found in high concentrations. The State of California actually considers dioxane “a chemical known to cause cancer”. Make sure this ingredient is not listed on the label.
These are two of the worst ingredients. I could list a couple more, but I don’t want to make this article too long. You should just be aware that even name-brand skin care products can contain these harmful ingredients. Don’t be a sucker and fall for slick advertising.
Also, when I said “focus solely on the ingredients” before, I didn’t just mean the bad ones. You should also know the ingredients that are the most effective in preventing wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin. It’s your responsibility as a consumer to know both the good and the bad.
